      Azacitidine + Gemtuzumab for Acute Myeloid Leukemia

      This phase II trial is studying the side effects of giving azacitidine together with gemtuzumab ozogamicin to see how well it works in treating older patients with previously untreated acute myeloid leukemia. Drugs used in chemotherapy, such as azacitidine, work in different ways to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. Azacitidine may also stop the growth of cancer cells by blocking some of the enzymes needed for cell growth. Monoclonal antibodies, such as gemtuzumab ozogamicin, can block cancer growth in different ways. Some block the ability of cancer cells to grow and spread. Others find cancer cells and help kill them or carry cancer-killing substances to them. Giving azacitidine together with gemtuzumab ozogamicin may kill more cancer cells.

      Stenting After Kidney Stone Removal

      This is a multicenter prospective trial with randomized and observational cohorts assessing patient-reported outcomes and unplanned healthcare utilization following ureteroscopic treatment of renal and ureteral stones, with placement versus omission of a ureteral stent. Eligible participants in the randomization trial will be randomized to ureteroscopy with stent placement or stent omission. Eligible participants that consent to the observational only cohort will complete surveys and the treating physicians will decide the treatment options for the participants. The study team hypothesizes that: * Pain interference change from pre-surgery to Day 7-10 will differ between the two treatment arms. This hypothesis will be evaluated separately in the randomized and observational cohorts. * Unplanned healthcare utilization in the treatment arms will have different unplanned healthcare utilization ranks leading to a win proportion significantly higher or lower than 0.5 in the stent omission arm compared to the stent placement arm.       IVUS-Guided PCI for Atherosclerosis

      Dearborn, Michigan
      Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)-guided percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has been shown in clinical trials, registries, and meta-analyses to reduce recurrent events after PCI. This is accomplished by improving the angiographic result with lesion and vessel assessment to guide stent selection and implantation and intravascular imaging following stent implantation to ensure an adequate treatment endpoint has been achieved. Despite extensive literature supporting the use of IVUS in PCI, utilization remains low in the United States. An increasing number of high-risk or complex lesions are being treated with PCI and we hypothesize that the impact of IVUS in these complex lesions will be of increased importance in reducing clinical adverse events while remaining cost effective.

      This randomized phase III trial studies chemotherapy and bevacizumab to see how well they work compared to chemotherapy alone in treating patients with stage IB, stage II, or stage IIIA non-small cell lung cancer that was removed by surgery. Drugs used in chemotherapy work in different ways to stop the growth of tumor cells, either by killing the cells, by stopping them from dividing, or by stopping them from spreading. Giving more than one drug (combination chemotherapy) may kill more tumor cells. Monoclonal antibodies, such as bevacizumab, may interfere with the ability of tumor cells to grow and spread. Bevacizumab also may stop the growth of non-small cell lung cancer by blocking the growth of new blood vessels necessary for tumor growth.       The objective of the rFVIIa for Acute Hemorrhagic Stroke Administered at Earliest Time (FASTEST) Trial is to establish the first treatment for acute spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) within a time window and subgroup of patients that is most likely to benefit. The central hypothesis is that rFVIIa, administered within 120 minutes from stroke onset with an identified subgroup of patients most likely to benefit, will improve outcomes at 180 days as measured by the Modified Rankin Score (mRS) and decrease ongoing bleeding as compared to standard therapy. FASTEST Part 2 is an extension of the FASTEST Trial where the subgroups include only those treated within 2 hours with a positive spot sign on a baseline CT angiogram.

      Educational Website for Colorectal Cancer

      This phase III trial evaluates whether a web-based intervention called Current Together after Cancer (CTAC) works to increase the number of patients with surgically removed (resected) colorectal cancer who receive surveillance care that aligns with current guidelines (guideline-concordant). Surveillance care after resection of colorectal cancer is critical to detect potentially curable return of disease (recurrence), yet up to 60% of colorectal cancer survivors fail to receive surveillance. This may be due to a lack of knowledge about the purpose of surveillance care and the risks of cancer recurrence, or a lack of confidence for managing surveillance care. The CTAC intervention is an online education intervention designed to improve patients' knowledge about surveillance and their self-efficacy for managing surveillance, and to promote effective communication with supporters and supporter engagement in patients' surveillance in a way that is aligned with each patient's preferences. By increasing a patient's knowledge, self-efficacy, and satisfaction with their supporter's engagement in their care, the CTAC intervention may increase the number of patients who receive guideline-concordant surveillance care after resection of colorectal cancer.

      How much do clinical trials in Michigan pay?

      Each trial will compensate patients a different amount, but $50-100 for each visit is a fairly common range for Phase 2–4 trials (Phase 1 trials often pay substantially more). Further, most trials will cover the costs of a travel to-and-from the clinic.

      How do clinical trials in Michigan work?

      After a researcher reviews your profile, they may choose to invite you in to a screening appointment, where they'll determine if you meet 100% of the eligibility requirements. If you do, you'll be sorted into one of the treatment groups, and receive your study drug. For some trials, there is a chance you'll receive a placebo. Across trials in Michigan 30% of clinical trials have a placebo. Typically, you'll be required to check-in with the clinic every month or so. The average trial length in Michigan is 12 months.

      How do I participate in a study as a "healthy volunteer"?

      Not all studies recruit healthy volunteers: usually, Phase 1 studies do. Participating as a healthy volunteer means you will go to a research facility in Michigan several times over a few days or weeks to receive a dose of either the test treatment or a "placebo," which is a harmless substance that helps researchers compare results. You will have routine tests during these visits, and you'll be compensated for your time and travel, with the number of appointments and details varying by study.

      What does the "phase" of a clinical trial mean?

      The phase of a trial reveals what stage the drug is in to get approval for a specific condition. Phase 1 trials are the trials to collect safety data in humans. Phase 2 trials are those where the drug has some data showing safety in humans, but where further human data is needed on drug effectiveness. Phase 3 trials are in the final step before approval. The drug already has data showing both safety and effectiveness. As a general rule, Phase 3 trials are more promising than Phase 2, and Phase 2 trials are more promising than phase 1.

      Do I need to be insured to participate in a medical study in Michigan?

      Clinical trials are almost always free to participants, and so do not require insurance. The only exception here are trials focused on cancer, because only a small part of the typical treatment plan is actually experimental. For these cancer trials, participants typically need insurance to cover all the non-experimental components.
